A Wild Animal and His Dealer.

Jean Puy (1876-1960) participated in the famous Salon d'Automne of 1905, during which the "Fauves" group appeared. Alongside Matisse, Derain, Vlaminck, Manguin, Camoin and Marquet, this young painter presented bold canvases with a dense palette and swift brushstrokes, which exuded great freedom of expression. Interested, the dealer Ambroise Vollard (1866-1939) bought his entire studio. This was the beginning of a collaboration lasting some twenty years, during which the artist provided the famous talent scout with nearly 550 paintings and drawings, ceramics and the illustrations for Ubu à la guerre (1923), written by Vollard himself. In this catalog, three art historians shed new light on the creative period 1900-1925, during which Jean Puy and Ambroise Vollard maintained a friendly and fruitful relationship. The works presented here—nudes, still lifes, landscapes of his native Roanne, the Midi, but also Brittany, where he regularly stayed—occupy a large place in his work. They all belonged to the Ambroise Vollard gallery.
