In association with Liu Jianlong, Emmanuelle Lesbre studied and photographed more than three hundred works, mostly unpublished, preserved in China, from the reserves of museums, archaeological institutes, or religious sanctuaries, most of which are inaccessible to the public. These masterpieces are approached thematically, following the genre classification in force at the Imperial Academy of Painting: religious painting, portraits of women, landscape painting, animal painting, painting of flowers and birds. To these traditional categories, the authors have added several others, including edifying painting, portraiture in general, scenes of morality, and the painting of scholars.
