Events, Labor Days, meetings
political and union... Mario Carnicelli likes to immerse himself in the events that punctuate the lives of his fellow citizens. Alternating between black and white and color, he gradually develops a documentary style at the crossroads of humanist photography and street photography. While he attends major events such as the funeral of the communist Togliatti in 1964, it is above all the individuals that interest him and what he can perceive of society through them. Making the street his observatory, he always manages to capture a gesture,
an expression, a look in the middle of a crowd or at the corner of a street. Thus, from Italy to the United States via Asia, his work is a true societal analysis of the last fifty years.
This book is published as part of the Viviane Esders Prize, dedicated to professional photographers over 60, awarded to Mario Carnicelli in 2022.
Mario Carnicelli was born in 1937 in Atri, Italy, and began working in the family photography business at the age of 14. He truly began his photography practice in the 1970s when he opened his studio in Florence on the Piazza del Duomo. Dedicated entirely to his studio, he achieved late recognition, notably with the publication of his first book, C'era Togliatti, published in 2014 by Danilo Montanari Editore. This series was the subject of a major solo exhibition at the Palazzo Fabroni, then at the National Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions in Rome. From 2018, his photographs were presented at the David Hill Gallery in London, allowing his work to reach a wider audience.
